A pendant of opalized petrified wood from Indonesia. Opalized petrified wood is a unique gemstone that forms when wood is fossilized and replaced by opal, a hydrated form of silica. Over millions of years, the organic material in the wood decays and is gradually replaced by minerals, while retaining the original structure of the wood. This thick piece has beautiful colors of green and brown. It is polished beautifully on all sides. The stone does have some crackles in the opalized silica part, but it is still a solid piece. The stone is accented with a small stamped silver bead. Opalized wood from Indonesia is highly sought after by collectors.
